Indications/Uses
Erythromycin has been used in the treatment of a wide variety of infections caused by susceptible organisms. Its uses have included the following: Upper Respiratory Tract Infections: Tonsillitis, peritonsillar abscess, pharyngitis, laryngitis, sinusitis, secondary infections in colds and influenza.
Lower Respiratory Tract Infections: Tracheitis, acute and chronic bronchitis, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, (lobar pneumonia, bronchopneumonia, primary atypical pneumonia), bronchiectasis, Legionnaires' disease, Streptococcus pneumoniae, pneumonia caused by Chlamydia trachomatis, Nocardia, Actinomyces israelii and Coxiella burneti.
Ear and Oral Infections: Otitis media and otitis externa, mastoiditis, gingivitis, dental abscesses, Vincent's angina.
Eye Infections: Blepharitis, trachoma, neonatal conjunctivitis.
Venereal Infections: Nonspecific urethritis, gonorrhea, syphilis (if the patient is allergic to penicillin), chlamydial infections of the genital tract and lymphogranuloma venereum.
Skin and Soft Tissue Infections: Boils and carbuncles, paronychia, abscesses, pustular acne, impetigo, streptococcal cellulitis, phlegmon, furunculosis, erysipelas, erythrasma., minor infections involving penicillinase - producing Staphylococcus aureus.
Gastrointestinal Infections: Cholecystitis, staphylococcal enterocolitis, gastroenteritis caused by Campylobacter jejuni.
Prophylaxis: Preoperative and postoperative, trauma, burns, rheumatic fever, bacterial endocarditis.
Other Infections: Osteomyelitis, diphtheria, scarlet fever, whooping cough (pertussis).
